Turkish media reports say police on have arrested at least 30 people in Istanbul in connection with recent antigovernment protests.

Police reportedly raided many locations on July 16, including student dormitories, and briefly detained hundreds of people.

The protests began peacefully in late May over Turkish authorities' plans to redevelop a park in central Istanbul, but it spiraled into broader demonstrations against Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan's government.

Five people died and thousands more were injured as police used tear gas and water cannon against protesters in Istanbul, Ankara, and other cities.

Despite widespread international criticism, Turkish authorities insist that the police response was proportionate.

There were renewed rallies in Istanbul and other cities during the weekend.

Police again used water cannon and tear gas to disperse the crowds, reportedly injuring numerous demonstrators.
