RSF Slams Twitter For Preparing To 'Cooperate With Censors'

International press-freedom monitoring group Reporters Without Borders (RSF) says it is "very concerned" by an announcement from the social-media website Twitter that it could block user posts from appearing in specific countries.

RSF says the move is tantamount to "cooperating with censors" and is "bad news for online freedom of expression."

Twitter announced on January 26 that it has "the ability to reactively withhold content from users in a specific country -- while keeping it available in the rest of the world."

It said that the company is now working in "countries that have different ideas about the contours of freedom of expression."

Twitter said it has not yet used this capacity and that if it ever does, it will "attempt" to inform users that their content is not accessible in specific countries.
