UEFA Investigates Player's Claim Of Racial Abuse In Romania

Sweden's Alexander Isak celebrates after the Euro 2020 qualifying soccer match between Romania and Sweden at the National Arena stadium in Bucharest on November 15.

UEFA, European soccer's governing body, announced that it will further investigate allegations of racial abuse by Romanian fans toward a Swedish player during a qualifying match for next year's continental soccer championship.

The player, Alexander Isak, made the allegations to a referee during a November 15 match Sweden won 2-0 in Bucharest.

The match had to be briefly stopped to broadcast a warning to the home team's fans.

Romania is one of 12 countries that will host next year's European soccer championship.

A UEFA disciplinary investigation is under way while Romania's soccer federation is separately facing charges an alleged "illicit banner" and "illicit chants."

A judgment on those charges will be delivered on December 12.

Since Romania is already under a one-year probation for previous incidents of offensive fan behavior, it could face more severe disciplinary action.

Any punishment could affect Romania's playoff match in March 2020 as it seeks qualification in the quadrennial tournament.
