Ukrainian Man Arrested For Smuggling 200,000 Cigarettes

Austrian police say they arrested a 26-year-old Ukrainian man on charges of smuggling more than 200,000 cigarettes after a car chase in the south of the country.

Police say the man was transporting 1,000 cartons of cigarettes in his vehicle when he ignored a police officer's order to stop his car.

The lengthy car chase ended when the man crashed his vehicle.

The suspect, whose name was not released, reportedly was only slightly injured.

Austria often is used as a transit route for smuggled goods that originate in Eastern Europe.

Austria's Finance Ministry estimates that up to 17 percent of all cigarettes consumed in Austria could be smuggled into the country to be sold illegally.
