The UN General Assembly has approved a resolution calling for a political transition in Syria.
The non-binding text adopted on May 15 strongly condemns the Syrian regime for its "escalation" of the war, and backed the role of the opposition Syrian National Coalition in transition talks.
The Arab-backed resolution was adopted by a vote of 107 to 12 with 59 abstentions -- a drop in support compared to a similar resolution that passed last August with 133 votes in favor.
Russia, a close ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, opposed the text as a potential obstacle to peace talks.
Earlier on the same day, reports said rebels launched an assault on the main prison in the Syrian city of Aleppo in an attempt to free hundreds of government opponents believed to be held there.
