In a new report, the UN says one in eight people suffers from chronic hunger.
According to the annual "State of Food Insecurity in the World," published on October 1, 842 million people did not have enough food for an active and healthy life from 2011 to 2013. That number is down from 868 million reported for the years 2010 to 2012.
The document says economic growth in developing countries and recent increases in agricultural productivity have improved incomes, access to food, and food availability.
Most of the world's undernourished people are still found in Southern Asia, where 295 million people are estimated to be hungry. But sub-Saharan Africa remains the region with the highest prevalence of undernourishment, with one fourth of people estimated to be hungry.
