UN Security Council To Vote On Yemen Resolution

The United Nations Security Council is expected to vote late on October 21 on a draft resolution condemning the violence and human rights violations in Yemen.

Reports quote diplomats as saying the text, which mentions no sanctions or other measures against the Yemeni regime, is likely to be approved by the 15-nation Security Council.

Reports say the draft -- drawn up by Britain and its European allies -- condemns killings blamed on the government, and calls on President Ali Abdullah Saleh to hand over power under the terms of a Gulf Cooperation Council peace plan.

Hundreds of people have been reported killed in Yemen since protests against the Saleh regime erupted in January.
