U.S. Sends First Representative To Nagasaki Commemorations

Doves fly around Peace Memorial Park after being released in ceremonies remembering atomic bomb victims in Nagasaki today.

For the first time, the United States this year has sent an official to the annual commemorations of the atomic bombing of the Japanese city of Nagasaki in the final days of World War II.

Sixty-six years ago today, the United States dropped an atomic bomb on the city, killing more than 70,000 people.

Three days earlier, the United States had dropped another nuclear bomb on Hiroshima, killing up to 140,000 people.

Washington sent its ambassador to Japan to the Hiroshima memorial event last year.

Six days after the August 9, 1945, Nagasaki bombing, Japan asked for an armistice in the war.
