The makers of the gold, silver, and bronze medals being awarded at the Summer Universiade-2013 international sports games for university students are being told to inspect all 3,014 medals made for the event.
Reports on July 9 said a gold medal won by a Russia and a bronze medal won by Chinese athlete broke after they accidentally dropped their awards.
The St. Petersburg-based factory that made the medals, Goznak, attributed the problem to the complex design of the medals, which are actually three parts fitted together, and recommended that athletes winning the awards exercise caution when handling them.
But workers of the Goznak factory have arrived in Kazan, where the games are being held, and have started checking medals to prevent any more mishaps with the prizes.
