White House Urges No New Iran Sanctions

U.S. White House spokesman Jay Carney

The White House has warned U.S. lawmakers against imposing new sanctions against Iran in order to give diplomacy a chance to resolve the dispute over the Islamic republic’s nuclear program.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said tightening sanctions against Iran could increase the chance of war.

"This is a decision to support diplomacy and a peaceful resolution to this issue. The American people, justifiably and understandably, prefer a peaceful solution that prevents Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon and this agreement has the potential to do that," Carney said.

Iran denies trying to make a nuclear weapon.

Another round of nuclear talks between Iran and six world powers is due to start next week.
