The U.S. Library of Congress has given to Afghan libraries and universities what it calls “digitized treasures” from its archives relating to the culture and history of Afghanistan.
A collection presented to Afghan President Hamid Karzai during his Washington visit includes digital copies of manuscripts, rare books, maps, and photographs.
The Library of Congress said the project was made possible by a $2 million grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York in support of the World Digital Library, which provides for viewing on the Internet images of documents and artifacts from countries around the world.
The Library of Congress said digitized versions of its Afghan treasures are being provided to the National Library of Afghanistan, Badakhsan University, Balkh University, Bamiyan University, Herat University, Kabul University, Kandahar University, and Nangarhar University.
