Russian Woman Accused Of Trying To Extort Cash From Ex-NY Governor

Former New York Governor Elliot Spitzer resigned in 2008 amid revelations that he had sex with prostitutes.

A Russian woman who accused former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer of assaulting her has been arrested for trying to extort money from him.

Police say 26-year-old Svetlana Zakharova was arrested on October 10 in New York City.

Zakharova fled the United States for her native Russia after accusing Spitzer in February of assaulting her at The Plaza Hotel in New York.

Spitzer, 56, denied the allegation.

Police say Zakharova has been charged with grand larceny by extortion. She's also charged with forgery in an unrelated case in which police say she used a Bloomfield, New Jersey, man's information and signed a lease agreement that ended up costing him $18,000.

Zakharova is scheduled to appear in a Manhattan criminal court on October 11.

Spitzer, a Democrat, resigned in 2008 amid revelations that he had sex with prostitutes.
