U.S. Calls For Free, Fair Iranian Election

U.S. Under Secretary for Political Affairs Wendy Sherman

WASHINGTON -- The United States has called on Iran to conduct a free and fair election that conforms to international standards and represents the will of the Iranian people.

The call was made on May 15 by U.S. Under Secretary for Political Affairs Wendy Sherman who spoke at the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in Washington.

Sherman said in the run-up to the June 14 presidential poll that the U.S. was doing whatever it could to encourage voices in Iran to press for a free election.

She also said that the U.S. would not take sides in next month’s vote.

“The decision who leads Iran is for the Iranian people.” Sherman said.

The Guardians Council, which vets all presidential hopefuls, is due to release the final list of candidates next week.
