White House Welcomes Arrest Of Last Serb Fugitive

White House spokesman Jay Carney

The White House has welcomed the arrest of the last fugitive from the 1990s Yugoslav conflicts.

Spokesman Jay Carney said Serbia's arrest of Goran Hadzic would "bring some much needed closure to the victims of the crimes committed in Croatia, and their families, and elsewhere in the region."

Both NATO and Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt -- a former EU Envoy to the region -- said the arrest of Hadzic in a national park about 65 km north of Belgrade closed an important chapter in recent European history.

Hadzic -- a Croatian Serb wartime leader indicted for crimes against humanity -- is expected to be extradited to the war crimes tribunal in The Hague within days.
