RFE/RL is looking for an Investigative Journalist for its Russian Investigative Unit in Riga, Latvia. In this role, you will work on complex original stories about Russia and for Russian-speaking audiences — from long-form investigations and special reports to multimedia projects and breaking investigative leads.

RFE/RL’s mission is to promote democratic values by providing accurate, uncensored news and open debate in countries where free press is threatened and disinformation is pervasive.

What you will do
You will:
- initiate, research, produce and edit investigative stories and special reports
- develop original story ideas and turn selected ideas into publishable investigations
- work with reliable sources, documents, databases, OSINT tools and other digital resources
- verify information, analyze findings and maintain high editorial standards
- conduct interviews remotely, in the studio or in the field
- produce content in multiple formats, including written investigations, multimedia stories, live reporting, blogs, podcasts, social media, photography and video
- cooperate with the central newsroom, multimedia and digital teams, Russian-language teams, other language services and field bureaus
- work with video producers and editors on multimedia and video adaptations
- review colleagues’ investigative work for factual accuracy, documentation and technical consistency
- contribute to editorial planning and participate in feedback sessions
- take part in collaborative investigations with partner news organizations and investigative networks when assigned
- represent RFE/RL in professional settings when required
What we are looking for
This role is suitable for an experienced investigative journalist who can work independently and collaboratively on complex editorial projects.
You should have:
- substantial experience in investigative journalism, preferably in a major news organization.
- a strong track record of original investigations
- experience delivering high-quality work under deadline pressure
- excellent investigative reporting, research, verification and storytelling skills
- the ability to develop original investigations from a network of reliable sources
- experience with investigative tools, databases, OSINT platforms and digital research methods
- strong understanding of Russia’s political, economic and social environment, as well as regional and international affairs
- the ability to work across editorial teams and contribute to a professional, collegial newsroom culture
- strong subject-matter expertise in aviation, maritime shipping, transport and logistics analysis, geolocation, satellite imagery and geospatial analysis, profiling individuals, mapping networks and data journalism
- a university degree in journalism or a related field is desirable; a combination of education and substantial investigative journalism experience will also be considered.
Languages:
- Russian: required, due to the nature of the role and the need to conduct interviews and research using Russian-language sources.
- English: required, with sufficient proficiency for effective internal communication.
