RFE/RL's Kosovo service announces a selection process for a Managing Editor in Prishtina.

Reporting to the Regional Director, Central Europe, the Managing Editor oversees the service’s news production, provides editorial feedback on news content and advises the Regional Director and other senior managers on news coverage strategy for Kosovo. S/he works closely with senior editors to ensure strong synergy among the service’s teams and efficient use and distribution of content, making sure news programs stay on schedule. The Managing Editor actively engages with other RFE/RL language services to ensure cooperation and efficient content sharing. S/he is responsible for delivering high-quality, impactful, innovative, and editorially sound content that is timely, factually accurate, impartial, and balanced. The Managing Editor is responsible for upholding editorial style guidelines for all news broadcasts and makes sure the service’s news content adheres to RFE/RL’s Standards of Ethical Journalism.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Editorial and Content Oversight:

  • Oversees news production in terms of day-to-day output and long-term planning.
  • Sets the daily and weekly news agenda and plans future news coverage, including breaking news, interviews, features, and investigative reports. Supports and provides daily editorial guidance to news teams.
  • Coordinates with the Regional Director on news coverage strategies.
  • Ensures production of high-quality content, cross-promotion, and effective distribution of content.
  • Ensures proper balance, establishes editorial style guides, and ensures adherence to RFE/RL standards of ethical journalism.
  • Works compatibly with RFE/RL language services to ensure efficient sharing and distribution of content.
  • Represents the department at RFE/RL’s editorial meetings, if requested.

Team Leadership and Talent Development:

  • Directly supervises the senior editorial staff, mentors content creators, evaluates the quality of production, works with senior editors and producers to streamline workflow and production cycles.
  • Provides timely, specific feedback to direct reports and makes sure managers provide timely, constructive feedback to their direct reports. Addresses staff performance inadequacies in a timely manner.
  • Manages staff and freelancers, including assignments, scheduling, leave approvals and training coordination.

QUALIFICATION:

Education:

  • Combination of education and experience
  • Journalism, international relations or related field Master’s degree

Work Experience:

  • 5+ years management experience in news media industry. Proven experience essential in both RFE/RL regions and international media environment.

Competencies:

  • Demonstrated competence in overseeing editorial content in multiple media platforms.
  • Deep knowledge of political, economic and social issues in RFE/RL’s broadcast regions and relevance to international news events.
  • Deep knowledge of journalistic and editorial standards and values that must be applied to the work of a news operation.
  • Possesses broad knowledge of television/video production
  • Demonstrates strong leadership skills;
  • Demonstrates strategic vision, and understanding of tactical planning;
  • Communicates clearly and effectively;
  • Capable of building teams;
  • Exhibits strong problem-solving skills;
  • Demonstrates knowledge of current media market trends;
  • Manages funds effectively to support a project;
  • Exhibits ability to think both creatively and analytically;
  • Possesses excellent time management and multi-tasking skills;
  • Is willing and able to travel for work-related events;
  • Knowledge of new technological developments in media.

Languages:

  • Broadcast Region language, Proficient (Mandatory)
  • English language, Working knowledge (Mandatory)
