U.S. Defends Arms Deal With Jordan

Washington, 2 August 2004 (RFE/RL) -- The United States has defended a prospective deal to equip Jordan with high-tech air-to-air missiles.

State Department spokesman Adam Ereli said today that Washington appreciates all that Jordan has done to contribute to regional stability.

Ereli also reiterated U.S. commitment for a secure Israel. However, he also cautioned Israel not to build 600 new homes at a large Jewish settlement on the West Bank alongside Jerusalem.
