Paris Meeting Focuses On Biodiversity

24 January 2005 -- The United Nations' Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is sponsoring an international conference on the world's shrinking biodiversity that is getting under way today in Paris, France.

The conference is bringing together scientists and policymakers to discuss ways to limit the loss of thousands of species of life on earth every year.

Scientists say species loss may be accelerating this century because of habitat loss and rising global temperatures.

The conference, which ends on 28 January, has no decision-making powers but is expected to result in proposals to address the problem.
