Azerbaijan's Aliyev To Wrap Up Iran Visit

26 January 2005 - Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev is scheduled to end a three-day visit to Iran today after visiting the northwestern city of Tabriz.

Yesterday in Tehran, Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei told Aliyev the two countries must not allow any external influence on their relations, particularly from the United States.

Khamenei said there solutions exist on all issues -- including the legal status of the Caspian Sea. Iran, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Turkmenistan have yet to resolve the division of the resource-rich sea since the breakup of the Soviet Union.

Aliyev also met with President Mohammed Khatami and Parliamentary Speaker Gholam Ali Haddad Adel during his trip.

This is Aliyev's first official visit to Iran since becoming Azerbaijan's president in October 2003.
