Pakistan Denies Russian Charges On Terrorist Training

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov (file photo) 25 June 2005 (RFE/RL) -- Pakistan today denied Russian allegations that militants trained on its territory had been entering Central Asia to carry out terrorist attacks there.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Jalil Abbas Jilani said there are no training facilities for militants in Pakistan and reminded that the United States acknowledges Islamabad's role in the global fight against terror.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov yesterday said members of Afghanistan's former Taliban ruling militia, the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan and other militant groups were being trained in Pakistan and Afghanistan with the aim of carrying out terrorist attacks in Central Asia and the Russian Federation.

Afghanistan has not yet reacted to the charge.
