China Executes 22 Drug Dealers In Two Days

25 June 2005 (RFE/RL) -- China's state media have reported the execution of 22 convicted drug traffickers in the past two days.

The convicted were paraded before large crowds before being executed.

The news came as the world prepares to mark the UN-sponsored International Anti-Drug Day on 26 June.

In recent years, China has publicly announced a spate of executions ahead of International Anti-Drugs Day.

The actual number of executions in China remains a state secret.

A Rome-based anti-capital punishment group known as Hands Off Cain, however, says at least 5,000 of the nearly 5,500 known executions worldwide last year were held in China.
