Opposition Takes Lead In Albanian Elections

Former President Sali Berisha waves after voting in Tirana on 3 July 4 July 2005 (RFE/RL) -- Albania's opposition took an early lead today as officials released preliminary results of parliamentary elections.

The Central Election Commission says that the opposition Democratic Party led by Sali Berisha is leading in 5 percent of Albania's more than 4,000 polling stations.

The results indicate that the Democratic Party is ahead with about 45 percent. Prime Minister Fatos Nano's Socialist Party has some 30 percent.

Election observers from European countries are expected to deliver their assessment later today of the fairness of the vote. Some 2.8 million people were eligible to cast ballots for 140 parliament seats.
