Multiple Explosions Rock London

7 July 2005 (RFE/RL) -- British police say an explosion destroyed a bus in central London today.

The explosion, which witnesses said left casualties, followed a blast on a London subway line earlier today that left several people injured and resulted in the entire underground system being shut down.

British police are reporting explosions on two other buses in London in addition to the one that was destroyed earlier.

Government officials say they are not sure about the causes of any of the blasts.

There have been unconfirmed reports of numerous fatalities.

One of the companies that maintains the London Underground says the subway blast was caused by a power surge.

Officials have described the subway explosion as a "major incident."

London Underground reported a second incident at another subway station in northeast London, but gave no immediate details.
