Italy Sweeps Country For Islamic Extremists

13 July 2005 -- Italian security forces today started a nationwide sweep of suspected Islamic extremists.

Hundreds of police swept into Italy's Islamic and North African communities, raiding homes and seizing materials in Rome, Naples, Turin, Florence, Bologna, Siracusa, Ragusa, and other cities.

Italian officials say the operation comes amid concerns that Italy could be a target for terrorist attacks following last week's attacks in London.

Also today, Italy sentenced two North African (Tunisian, Moroccan) men to prison terms of up to four years and eight months for having links to international terrorist organizations.
