Rumsfeld To Visit Kyrgyzstan Next Week

Donald Rumsfeld (file photo) 20 July 2005 -- Kyrgyzstan says U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld plans to visit next week.

The Defense Ministry said today that acting Defense Minister Ismail Isakov will meet with Rumsfeld during the visit on 25-16 July.

The ministry did not specify what issues would be discussed.

The announcement comes after Kyrgyzstan's newly elected President Kurmanbek Bakiev questioned whether U.S. troops should continue to be based in his country.

Earlier this month the Shanghai Cooperation Organization -- a regional grouping that includes Kyrgyzstan, Russia, and China -- said Washington should set a date for the withdrawal of its military bases in Central Asia.
