London Police Say Man Killed Not Tied To Bombing Probe

23 July 2005 -- Police in London say a man shot dead by plain-clothes officers yesterday was not connected to the four failed bomb attacks on the city's transport system on 21 July.

A statement calls the shooting a "tragedy and one that the Metropolitan Police Service regrets."

Police say they believe they now know the identity of the man, although he is still subject to formal identification.

Police officers yesterday chased and shot dead the man in London's Stockwell subway station. Police originally said they believed the man -- who was wearing a thick coat and attempting to flee -- was a potential suicide bomber or tied to the attacks.

The incident came amid one of the biggest manhunts in British history, as police search for four men identified as being behind the 21 July attacks.

Police are questioning two men arrested in connection with the blasts.

Those attacks came exactly two weeks after four suicide bombers killed 52 people in the London subway and on a double-decker bus.
