Manhunt, Arrests Continue After Egyptian Bombings

24 July 2005 -- Egyptian authorities are continuing to make arrests in the course of a massive hunt for those behind the terror bombings which killed almost 90 people in the Red Sea resort of Sharm El-Sheikh.

Egyptian Interior Minister Habib al-Adly said the authorities already have some leads. He said the three blasts in Sharm el-Sheikh could be connected with the bomb attack last October on another Red Sea resort, Taba.

Al-Adly gave no details of arrests, but earlier reports said some 35 people have been arrested so far.

Most of the victims were Egyptians but at least seven foreigners are among the dead. Many others were critically injured and the death toll is expected to rise.

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, who surveyed the damage yesterday, said the attacks only increased Egypt's determination to fight terrorism.

"To the families of the innocent victims, I send you my condolences and assure you that I will continue to fight terrorism, and everything which represents a threat to our nation, a threat to its people. Our fight against terrorism will continue, with all our powers and might. We will protect the security and stability of Egypt. We will protect the people from any future threats and dangers," Mubarak said.

There were conflicting claims of responsibility, one came from an Al-Qaeda-linked group, the other from a previously unknown, apparently local group.
