At Least Six Iraqis, Including Chalabi Aide, Killed

6 August 2005 -- At least six Iraqis have been killed in overnight violence as a U.S.-led offensive in western Iraq enters a third day.

Insurgents killed two Iraqis in Baghdad late yesterday, including a senior official in the party led by Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Chalabi. It was the second member of his party to be killed this week.

In Samarra, central Iraq, clashes between security forces and insurgents left two Iraqi soldiers and one civilian dead. Four civilians were wounded.

A policeman was killed in Baq'ubah and another wounded when gunmen sprayed their checkpoints with machine-gun fire.

Meanwhile, U.S. and Iraqi troops patrolled Al-Hadithah in western Iraq on the third day of Operation Quick Strike.

The operation, involving 1,000 troops, began after 14 U.S. Marines were killed in a roadside bomb blast near Al-Hadithah.
