EU Head Urges U.S. To Boost Aid


12 September 2005 (RFE/RL) -- European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso today called on the United States to match EU's spending on the world's poorest countries.

Barroso said that the 14-16 September UN summit in New York is a "unique opportunity" for UN members to help poor copuntries.

Barroso said the United States can play an important role in doing that. He also said that the European Union is currently the world's largest aid donor.

Barroso said that the EU has agreed to double its aid budget by 2010. He also said the United States has not made any firm commitments on aid so far.
