Lebanon Charges 13 With Plotting Terror

Lebanon has been a frequent target of terrorism, like this bomb blast at a hotel in February 2005 (AFP) 16 January 2006 -- Lebanon's top military magistrate today officially charged 13 Muslim extremists with planning to carry out terror attacks.

Magistrate Rashi Mezher said the suspects were detained earlier this month in different areas in Lebanon. They include seven Syrians, three Lebanese, a Saudi, a Jordanian, and a Palestinian.

Mezher said he has seen no proof that the suspects are members of Al-Qaeda.

Although Al-Qaeda has rarely carried out attacks in Lebanon, it is believed that the group has supporters and sympathizers among extremist factions hiding in Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon.
