Baku Police Disperse Student Protest

(RFE/RL) BAKU, April 6, 2006 (RFE/RL) -- Azerbaijani police today dispersed dozens of students who were picketing the Education Ministry, RFE/RL's Azerbaijani Service reports.

The protesters belong to the Independent Azerbaijan University (Musteqil Azerbaycan Universitet, or MAU). The country's education authorities recently stripped MAU of its license, saying it had accepted many more students this year than permitted under government-set quotas.

Education Minister Misir Mardanov has said that no MAU students will be allowed to graduate this year.

MAU students are demanding that they be transferred to other universities or be allowed to sit graduation exams.
