At Least 29 Women, Children Dead In Karachi Stampede

(RFE/RL) April 9, 2006 -- At least 29 women and children have been killed in southern Pakistan after a stampede broke out at a religious gathering for women.

Witnesses say the stampede occurred soon after an assembly marking the anniversary, on April 11, of the birth of the Prophet Muhammad ended and hundreds of worshippers began dispersing in crowded central Karachi.

More than 70 others were injured. Reports say dozens of unconscious women and children have been sent to hospitals.
