Belarus Authorities Threaten To Close Independent Paper

(Bymedia.net) November 28, 2006 -- Belarusian authorities have warned a leading independent newspaper that it faces closure.

Deputy Information Minister Liliya Ananich said on November 27 that the weekly "Nasha Niva" failed to indicate its address in the issues published this month, as required by law.

The newspaper has described the latest move as part of continuing government efforts to muzzle critical voices. Media watchdog Reporters Without Borders has criticized government moves against the newspaper.
