Suspect Charged With Plotting To Kidnap, Kill British Soldier

February 9, 2007 -- British police have charged a suspect over an alleged plot to kidnap and kill a member of the country's armed forces.

The man is one of five who are being prosecuted under antiterrorism legislation in connection with the alleged plot.

"One [of the suspects] has been charged with an offense of engaging in conduct to give effect to his intention to kidnap and kill a member of the armed forces," said Susan Hemming, head of the counterterrorism division of the British Crown Prosecution Service.

Nine men were detained in dawn raids on January 31 in the central English city of Birmingham.

Five are due to appear in a London court today. Three have been released. Another man is still being questioned.
