Turkmen Opposition Leader Kuliev Dead


Avdy Kuliyev (file photo) (ITAR-TASS) April 10, 2007 (RFE/RL) -- A Turkmen opposition leader, former Foreign Minister Avdy Kuliyev, has diesd at the age of 71, RFE/RL's Turkmen Service reported.


According to his wife, Tatyana Kuliyeva, he died late on April 9, two days after undergoing stomach surgery.


Kuliyev was Turkmenistan's first foreign minister and later become a prominent opposition leader and head of the United Turkmen opposition.
