Sarkozy Adviser In Turkey For EU Talks

French President Nicolas Sarkozy (file photo) (official site) May 29, 2007 -- A top adviser to French President Nicolas Sarkozy had talks in Turkey over the weekend on Ankara's drive to join the European Union, a move the French leader opposes.

A Turkish official said today Jean-David Levitte, Sarkozy's diplomatic adviser, met with high-ranking Turkish officials to discuss Franco-Turkish relations, including Turkey's EU membership bid.

Sarkozy is a opponent of Ankara's eventual membership to the EU, arguing that most of Turkey's territory is in Asia and that the idea of a united Europe would be diluted if its borders stretch that far.
