Arrests Made Over Deadly Baku Building Collapse

President Ilham Aliyev visited the ruins (AFP) August 29, 2007 (RFE/RL) -- The head of a construction company has been arrested in connection with the deadly collapse of an unfinished building in Baku, RFE/RL's Azerbaijani Service reported.

At least eight people died as a result of the collapse of the multistory building. There are conflicting reports about the number of people still trapped in the rubble, ranging from two to 50.

REF/RL's Azerbaijan Service reports that one person was rescued today, bringing the number of people who survived the accident to five. The service also reports that rescue workers have abandoned using heavy equipment, and are trying to free any remaining survivors by hand.

In a joint statement, Azerbaijan's Prosecutor-General's Office, Interior Ministry, and Emergency Situations Ministry today said the building was being constructed without the relevant authorities' permission.

Baku city prosecutor Aziz Seyidov announced that along with the company director, three other people have been arrested, and an investigation has been launched.

President Ilham Aliyev visited the scene of the accident today.
