Turkmen Rights Panel Meets For First Time in Ashgabat


September 18, 2007 (RFE/RL) -- An official commission tasked with monitoring human rights in Turkmenistan has met for the first time in Ashgabat.


The commission approved a draft national program on human rights on September 17.


It also approved a human rights project with the European Union and with UN refugee and development agencies.


The state news agency, TDH, reports that the commission will check to ensure that Turkmenistan's laws are in harmony with international human rights norms.
