Tbilisi, March 20 (RFE/RL) -- Georgian President Eduard
Shevardnadze said today that Russian Foreign Minister Yevgeny
Primakov and Russian Defense Minister Pavel Grachev will soon visit
Georgia in an attempt to settle the Georgian-Abkhazian conflict.
Itar-Tass quoted him as saying that this was decided on his trip to Moscow yesterday. However, he did n-o-t give a precise date for the visit. He said it is also possible that the two Russian ministers will visit Sukhumi, capital of breakaway Abkhazia.
Shevardnadze also said that Russia has tightened up border controls with Georgia, with the aim of blockading Abkhazia. Shevardnadze's words, as quoted by Itar-Tass, were: "Not a single vessel will now call at Sukhumi port without first reaching agreement with the Georgian government."
