Romanian President To Tour Caucases

By Bogdan Lefter

Bucharest, March 25 (RFE/RL) - Romanian President Ion Iliescu is scheduled to begin a three-day tour of the Caucasus today that will take him to Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan.

Iliescu is expected to sign bilateral political treaties in Georgia and Azerbaijan. Romania already has a treaty with Armenia, but Iliescu's spokesman Traian Chebeleu announced last week that further Armenian-Romanian accords could be expected.

During the tour, Iliescu is slated to discuss regional economic cooperation in the Black Sea area. But correspondents say the agenda will focus mainly on the transportation of natural gas and oil from Central Asia to Europe.

Iliescu was also said ready to offer his support toward a peaceful political settlement for the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
