Ashgabat, April 25 (RFE/RL) - A summit of the regional Economic Cooperation
Organization (ECO) is expected to be held in Ashgabat next month. And reports
say the summit is expected to offer an opportunity for direct talks between
Afghanistan and Pakistan.
U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Robin Raphael sought to improve ties between Kabul and Islamabad, during recent visits to Afghanistan and Pakistan. She also outlined proposals for resolving the Afghanistan conflict.
In September of last year, Pakistan's embassy in Kabul was burned, and Afghanistan's government has accused Pakistan of supporting Afghanistan's opposition Taleban forces.
Raphael this week is also holding talks in Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kazakhstan en route to Moscow. She is scheduled to hold talks in Moscow Sunday (Apr 28).
