Council of Europe Prepares Conference, Comments On Belarus

Warsaw, May 21 (RFE/RL) -- Poland's President Aleksander Kwasniewski today met a delegation of the parliamentary assembly of the Council of Europe. The Strasbourg-based council tomorrow opens a three-day conference in Warsaw on economic reform in eastern Europe.

Council Assembly Chairwoman Leni Fischer, today met the chairman of Poland's senate, Adam Struzik.

Struzik told reporters that he and Fischer discussed the situation in Belarus. Struzik said Poland is especially concerned, not only because Belarus shares a border with Poland, but also because of what Struzik called "autocratic elements" in Belarus.

Council Parliamentary Assembly Chairwoman Fischer said "there remains a lot to do in building democracy in Belarus." Belarus has observer status on the Council of Europe.
