Anniversary of Budennovsk Raid

Budennovsk, June 14 (RFE/RL) -- The Southern Russian town of Budennovsk today marks the one year anniversary of a deadly raid launched by Chechen separatists.

Some 130 civilians were killed and more than 400 injured when forces led by field commander Shamil Basayev stormed the town. Basayev escaped with most of the gunmen following the raid.

A remembrance service was held today for victims of the raid at a local cemetery where they were buried. The ceremony was highlighted by the laying of a cornerstone made of Armenian stone.

During a visit to Budennovsk two months ago, President Boris Yeltsin said "the world knows no other terrorist act of such monstrous dimensions."
