Albright: NATO Expansion Cannot Be Vetoed From Outside

Prague, July 5 (RFE/RL) -- Madeleine Albright, the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, said today that NATO expansion cannot be vetoed from outside the alliance.

Albright spoke at a news conference after meeting with Czech Foreign Minister Josef Zieleniec in Prague.

The Czech Republic is a leading candidate among former communist countries for inclusion in NATO if the defence alliance expands Eastwards despite strong opposition in the past from Russia.

Zieleniec told reporters that the process of NATO expansion was getting into a decisive phase. He said the Czech Republic expected that the "end of this year and first half of next year will be important moments in this process."
