Copenhagen, 14 August 1996 (RFE/RL) -- The president of Macedonia, Kiro Gligorov, has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Gligorov was nominated by an unnamed professor in the United States and by a group of what Swedish TV today described as "Macedonian intellectuals."
Gligorov has been president of the former Yugoslav republic since its declaration of independence in 1992. Last year, he survived a failed attempt on his life in Skopje.
