Serbia: Police Officer Killed In Troubled Kosovo Province

Belgrade, 29 August 1996 (RFE/RL) - A police officer was shot and killed in the troubled Kosovo province today, say Serbian police.

Police told the Yugoslav news agency Tanjug that the slain officer was an Albanian who has served in the Serbian police and state security since 1987.

He was shot yesterday afternoon as he stepped off a bus near his family home in the village of Donje Ljupce.

It was the fifth attack on police this month in the southern province. About 90 percent of the residents of Kosovo are ethnic Albanians who have boycotted Serbian institutions and set up their own. The ethnic-Albanian institutions are considered illegal by the Serbian government in Belgrade.
