Tajikistan: Trade, Economic Cooperation Subject Of Talks With Iran


Dushanbe, 5 September 1996 (RFE/RL) -- Tajikistan's President Imomoli Rakhmanov has met in Dushanbe with Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Mahmud Vayazi to discuss bi-lateral trade and economic cooperation, according to Interfax.

Vayazi is reported to have emphasized the need to set up joint ventures in the textile industry, metallurgy and the fishing industry. The two also discussed regional security and cooperation.

When referring to the Tajikistan conflict, Rakhmonov is quoted as saying again that he is prepared to meet Tajik opposition leader Said Abdullo Nuri. Nuri maintains a headquarters in Iran. Russia is trying to arrange a Nuri-Rakhmonov meeting in Moscow.
