Turkmenistan: Gas Pipeline To Pakistan Subject Of Future Talks

Ashgabat, 5 September 1996 (RFE/RL) - Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Uzbekistan plan to hold talks in the near future on the construction of a gas pipeline from Turkmenistan to Pakistan.

Agreement on the talks was reached as Afghanistan's Deputy Foreign Minister Abdorrahim Gafurzai met Turkmen leaders over the last two days in Ashgabat, says the Turkmen presidential press service.

The pipeline project was also discussed at a meeting Gafurzi held with Turkmenistan's President Saparmurat Niyazov. The two were quoted by the press service as saying they believe the project will promote general stabilization in the region. A memorandum of understanding on the project was signed by representatives of the four states in Ashgabat in mid-May.
