Poland/Hungary: Antall Receives Posthumous Award


Warsaw, 10 September 1996 (RFE/RL) - Poland's President Aleksander Kwasniewski today awarded the Adalbert Prize to Clara Antall on behalf of her late husband, Jozsef Antall, Hungary's former prime minister. The presentation was made in Gniezno in western Poland

Antall is receiving the posthumous award in recognition of his role in the political changes of eastern Europe in the early 1990's.

The winner of the Adalbert Prize is chosen by an international committee of representatives from Poland, Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary. The prize is named after Saint Adalbert, Poland's patron saint. It consists of a gold medal and 20,000 German marks.

Antall was elected prime minister in 1990, after Hungary's first post-communist elections. After a long battle with cancer, he died of heart failure in December, 1993.
