Chechnya: Lebed And Chernomyrdin Discuss Talks

Moscow, 18 September 1996 (RFE/RL) -- Russian Security Council Secretary Aleksandr Lebed met Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin today to discuss his latest talks in Chechnya.

The meeting lasted 40 minutes, said Viktor Konnov, an aide to Chernomyrdin. He did not give details.

Earlier, Lebed said Chernomyrdin would join talks with the separatists this week to try and resolve difficulties in implementing last month's peace accord.

Lebed returned to Moscow from Chechnya last night after holding talks with federal commanders and rebel leaders. He his talks with separatist leaders had been successful and that complete mutual understanding had been reached on many issues, including the withdrawal of Russian troops.

The withdrawal was halted last week following a dispute over a prisoner exchange. Our correspondent in Chechnya quoted Lebed as saying that the withdrawal would resume again by the end of the week.
